Presumably this Downes thing will become the norm for a while 13:14 - Sep 1 with 546 viewsWarkTheWarkITFC

Let's be honest. Even if we can offer him £3k - £4k a week to be one of the highest earners post salary cap, he could double that at least in the division above.

There's going to be an awful lot of League One players that would rather earn another 150% sitting unused in a Championship squad that playing in League One sadly.

So who is really better than what the League One salary cap dictates they can be paid? Downes, Woolfenden, KVY and Jackson for sure.

A fit Huws and Bishop definitely. Dozzell on potential alone maybe.

After that we've presumably got a lot of League One players in this squad now on ability who are still on bigger wages but aren't going to get a better deal than what we can pay them when we renegotiate because there won't be any interest higher.

The likes of Dobra, El Mizouni may go on to be but we face the very real possibility, along with other League One clubs, of having the little talent we have stripped out of our squad with transfer requests and players leaving at the end of their contract.

I'd assume we are better prepared than most but it's only going to be another season I'd say before we are likely to be entirely League One quality and I wouldn't be surprised now if Jackson and Woolfenden ended up going in the next few weeks also.

Poll: How many points from 18 would Lambert need to have to actually be sacked?

Yes, this is going to be by far the best chance we have of getting out of League One - similar to the Joe Royle season with Bent, Counago, Kugi etc., where we should have won the championship.

Given that our recruitment isn't great and our selection of managers is rubbish, if we don't make it out this year the club is pretty much doomed to stagnate unless there are big changes, because the only way to get out of the league with the salary cap will be to have better recruitment from the conference / League 2 than other clubs.

Palace are two divisions above and would probably offer 5-10 times the wage he's likely to be on here.

No brainer for him.
