I think the smear campaign took place last Summer. The ex president was under pressure from all sides, Messi wanting out, a black hole in Barça's finances, poor signings, poor results etc.
Bartomeu is alleged to have hired a communications agency to smear anyone who spoke up, that included players and staff. The funding of the campaign is being investigated as the paperwork ha gone missing.
Unsurprisingly the ruse was uncovered and Bartomeu lost a vote of no confidence back in October. New presidential elections take place this weekend.
So apart from appearing incredibly dumb thinking his plan could work, he's now having to face an account audit during his time in charge. There's a lot of speculation about what could be found there and if any other paperwork ended up in the shredder. | | | |
