I was just think about the stunning performance of Jordan Pickford and remembered he played for Sunderland before Everton.

This got me thinking about over England Goalies path to the top and remembered Pope was an Ipswich fan and academy player.

Anyone have any memories however vague of Pope at the academy?

While Pope is a good shot stopper, his distribution and passing skills are way behind those of Pickford.

The last few games have really cemented why Pickford is trusted over Pope and Pope doesn't really get a look in. Excellent with his distribution, quick to read scenarios and his new temperament seems to be working wonders.

I played with Pope, and to be honest I never in a million years would've forecast his career trajectory. It wasn't that long ago that he was playing in the Conference really, and goes to show how a bit of good fortune can make all the difference. I think you could definitely argue that had he not been playing locally on loan (Bury, as in Manchester Bury) then that move to Burnley likely never would've come about, as it was then that he got on their radar, before going back to Charlton. He's done so well to establish himself in the Premier League, and win England caps.

He's rightly behind Pickford IMO. Picky has experienced some dips in form for Everton, he was dropped earlier in the season IIRC but I can't recall when he's ever let England down. His distribution is so good too, and in a side that likes to control possession and has defenders that are so comfortable on the ball its such an asset. Especially with the pace we have further forward and ability to start counter attacks.
