If one incident highlights just how special a club we were back then it’s the story in the Mr John book of How Mariner became an Ipswich player He was linked to several “bigger clubs” and when he came to PR to see Robson we were not his first choice. On arrival Sir Bob greeted him and suggested they go and have a talk, while a slightly odd old guy greeted Mrs Mariner saying while they do the boring stuff I’ll show you round. Sir John then spent a few hours showing Mrs Mariner where they could live, what the schools were like etc etc On returning to PR she got out the car and said to Paul “this is the first time anyone from a club has shown an interest in me, I want you to sign here” Paul goes into say that he And Sir John became friends but whenever they met in the future be it as Ipswich, Arsenal, England or beyond he was always asked “and how’s your wife and family” Us old Town fans have so much to be grateful for, our time and the people at that time were so very special. Thank you Paul from a very dusty BN12 | |
