Well, even though not executed well and flipping to what looked like a 4-2-4 at times, it is an effective system if not spectacular, which Col U fans would say is the hallmark of McGreal. At times Edwards kept his shape well, at other times he switched off from squeezing the Wigan midfield another 10 or 15 yards when the ball was on the other flank allowing them outlets a little too easy, as did Chaplin in truth. Out of possession both worked hard but they were caught too high on the odd occasion and didn’t make their straight runs back to regain shape as well as they should. Full backs were adventurous in patches but no way near the level of deep roaming runs we became accustomed to under Cook. This being a stand out difference of a McGreal vs Cook style of football. If McGreal can get full-backs overlapping or carrying the ball more, wide midfielders playing ten yards further ahead of the ball and at least one midfielder getting by a striker at least once, then the system can work and might yield some better performances. Pragmatism very much welcomed to steady the ship but let’s not rest on our laurels after a well fought point - it needs a lot of work. Cue Harris to now come in and by-pass the middle four! | |
