If they keep him alive (remember they are reinstating the death penalty) he could become the new president.
This is going to be messy, but I believe Putin has massively miscalculated: sanctions are hitting the economy already, and Russian troops (the non-psychopathic ones) are clearly uncomfortable with their occupation of Ukraine.

Putin has undoubtedly miscalculated but the problem with that is that he had few ways to stop being President before this and now virtually none and having gone this far he isn't going to back down now; that makes this war intrinsic to his personal survival.
