Alyssa had T-cell leukaemia, chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant didn't work. Given this they decided to treat her with base-edited T-Cells (T-Cells where the DNA has been modified) from a donor which were designed to hunt out and kill only the leukaemia causing T-Cells.
She's now been in remission for 6 months and is doing well and given the T-Cells can come from any donor and then modified it's looking like a very promising treatment for which will be able to be offered to children earlier when they are less sick and could cover other types of leukaemia.
