So, the best World Cup ever then.....to be fair..... 11:55 - Dec 16 with 1003 viewshomer_123

...nothing has changed has it.

Most still went or watched it...all the pre tourney hubbub has dissipated.

However, it does appear women feel safer due to no alcohol: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/63991529

I think we're in the eye of the storm for the Qatar criticism. I'm expecting it to return strongly in January.

Truly impaired.

Lots of countries seemed vastly underrepresented compared to their usual level of support. Many empty seats in high profile knock-out games. I expected a lot more footage of a great mix of countries having fun together (maybe the biased Western media has kept it from me?). All the complaints people had at the start remain valid, but there is little point in continuing to moan about the same things for 4 weeks.

It’s been a complete waste of a World Cup and if it wasn’t for the potentially enduring image of Messi finally winning it on home soil it would be completely forgotten about within a couple of weeks.

Let me be clear, I would not have exercised any vote to hold the World Cup in Qatar.

But given that it was held there, I think it's fair to acknowledge some silver linings.

- First female referee at the world cup.
- Millions of people in the middle east enthused about the game - whatever one thinks about the regimes, these are real people who've never seen the global game come to their doorstep.
- The first African country in the semis

There's been some great football, but it seems appropriate to cite the above points as they relate to diversity. It's good to have some wins for diversity, including for women, in a country which stifles diversity in a number of forms.

These are not justifications, but they are positive by products of a very unfortunate episode.

It’s been pretty good. I’ve enjoyed it. England hit par. I’ll forget about it next week.

Indeed. I think most of the football has been good, especially by past World Cup standards. I will now admit that a 32 team finals has been good, with only a couple of hopeless teams so the groups have generally been interesting. However, the elephant in the room is the ghastly prospect of the 48 team World Cup, which means more no-hopers plus a desperately convoluted procedure to get 48 teams down to 16. Apparently FIFA are rethinking the 16 groups of 3, but it's hard to find a format which makes the group stages interesting. 12 groups of 4 with 8 of the 12 3rd place teams going through is no better. The best of a bad bunch IMO is 12 groups of 4 with the 12 winners plus the 4 best 2nd place teams going through.
