A new striker is an absolute must 08:43 - Aug 10 with 1434 viewsAsa

Freddie is such a likeable guy and you can't knock his goals record last season, especially when you consider the minutes he played, but I do not see any way he makes the step up to anything remotely like what we'd need in the Championship.

Hirst coming in has really shown up some of the things that Ladapo doesn't do anywhere near as well. It's quite noticeable how much work Hirst gets through even 70 minutes into a match, as opposed to the drop off when Ladapo comes on. We stop holding the ball up, we stop offering width and Freddie just doesn't press in the same way.

He did a great job last year, admittedly many of his better performances being in matches we were already 2-0 or 3-0 up in and absolutely dominating. Once he got that first goal he had a couple of months where he looked unplayable at times, but once Hirst came in our style evolved that little bit more and we started battering everybody in sight.

As much as I have liked him at Town and loved the role he played last season, if Hirst was to get injured, we'd be in all sorts of trouble if we want to achieve anything other than mid-table. I have no doubt Kieran would tweak things with Broadhead or Chaplin up top if needed and we might be okay, but someone in the Hirst mould who can offer the same things is an absolute must when we have a system that works and suits the players, we can't afford to carry anyone at this level and I just don't see where Ladapo fits into that system when he's such a huge drop off at a few of the things he'd need to do to get anywhere near what Hirst offers us and the system.

I really can't decide how I feel about Freddie.

He obviously got a lot of goals in not many minutes last season, but he always seems to be jogging, and slow to react to a lot of things. Hirst is miles better than him, like WAY better. The thought of Hirst getting injured and having to have Ladapo up front is worrying. Ladapo is a poacher rather than someone that can hold up the ball and bring others into play imo. His passing or lack thereof tonight showed it.

But again, he gets goals so that kind of goes against what I say above.
I'm rambling, sorry.

The difference between our first team attackers and B team attackers is huge, especially in terms of ball retention.

Poll: Who would you play in place of Burns on Sunday?

The thing for me is that I think Ladapo would be an excellent Championship striker in the right partnership or in a team that played to his strengths.

We have now evolved to play to Hirst's strengths. Hirst is constantly moving into the channels, on his toes and looking to make the sort of runs he did for Broadhead's pass Sunday. As you say Freddie is more a player that stays central, moves very little and waits for things to happen instead of actually making them happen.

He does get goals, but so many of them were as a sub against a tired defence that was sitting everyone behind the ball trying to stop a hammering where we were constantly peppering the goal with shots and crosses that plays into Freddie's strengths as a poacher.

Yeah I agree with everything you've said there!
