Rum old couple of months packed into today's game 20:28 - Sep 16 with 1417 views | Mullet | To think Wednesday absolutely mugged us for a draw last time we came here, to only beat them by a goal felt a bit bittersweet when full time came just before sunset. They've regressed from the team we left for dust in League One, yet we got dragged down into their lower league game far too often. They've got the air of a dog whose run away with a string of sausages and only just realised no one has chased them. Feral, clueless and not sure what to do now they've got here I'd expect them to drop like a stone. I love Freddie but thought he had a poor game today. He got one good shot off target but the keeper's legs won out. Apart from that, he seemed to struggle to get the ball out from under his feet. The difference Hirst made when breaking the lines and scaring the hell out of them was as good as his inability to take his chances were frustrating. Leif won't start Tuesday, I'm not sure when he will again but he looked in real pain. Had Clarke not improved as the game went on he'd probably have got the hook. Whichever side we play Williams on though, he's some player. If he's not too good for us now, won't be long until he is. It's just telling we didn't seem to use Leif all half and suddenly when we do we score. The joy we got down our right was so good, had we been able to use more subs and anticipated the decades of wasted time we might have scored a hatful. Jackson on one side and Hutchinson on the other by full time could have been enough to break the stubbornness of the defence and forcefield stopping us getting a shot on target. I'd also consider Morsy getting a break soon mainly to protect his reputation. He seems to get booked a lot, but then refs let the same things go for others. Happened again today whereas had Burns been a second or more off than he was, he'd likely have seen red. Them's the breaks I guess. Also seeing a professional football concede not one but two foul throws in a game was as confusing as Freddie trying to claim Chaplin's goal. It was still a lovely move even if there seemed to be absolute limbs in the box for a shot that presumably pinged right through the lot of them. Hillsborough is my favourite away ground but £39 and a few empty seats around us was a pisstake. [Post edited 16 Sep 2023 20:50]

It does look more like it from that angle to be fair! Still he didn't look to get anything close to it from directly behind the goal

It looked like a deliberate elbow or forearm. Agree about the Burns foul. The defending for the goal was classic comedy keystones cops. A gaggle of defenders rushing towards the goal, it may have hit all of them before going in, and Chaplin was in acres of space as one of their players (Palmer?) seemed like he couldn"t be arsed to track him. Spot on with Williams, there was a move late on that was Bale-esque, in the Champions League against Barça. Ran off the pitch to get round the defender, and whilst Bale smashed it past the keeper, Williams tried an almost impossible pass to Jackson that nearly came off. Think he has a very high ceiling.

I don't mind him being booked for it, but Paterson took out Leif with far worse and it was probably the 4th or 5th time he led with an elbow with no consequences at all. It will cost us if that injury is bad beyond say Blackburn. Same with the timewasting Hladky got booked for, their keeper was far worse. It's the sort of inconsistency and guessing that seems to ruin games. Today there was times where the linesman didn't give stuff right in front of him but the ref did, or he'd flag for a foul on the far side where nothing happened. The weirdest one was Hirst being surrounded and he gave them a free kick for Hirst grabbing the guy's shorts when he was fending off all sorts.

That was bizarre, might have been Broadhead rather than Hirst, I'm not sure, but anyway, even McKenna described it as giving Wednesday one last chance to get back in the game. He wasn't impressed.

Yeah, not sure why I typed Hirst either then. It's a good chance to make an early mark this week and if we come through with 9/9 pts we're not only in a strong position, but will consistently come through games which are more even than we are used to given the run in to get here.
