History, apparently has a place in football 08:13 - Oct 16 with 1399 views | ArnieM | The difference is, it’s being talked about by people who know and understand the game and not just this Club’s fan base. “Bobby Robson masterminded those spirited FA Cup winners of 1978 and Uefa Cup winners three years later. “Sir Bobby’s an icon of English football and an absolute legend of Ipswich Town,” McKenna continues. “It’s been lovely over the last 18 months how many supporters come up to speak to me when I’m filling the car or walking the dog and say, ‘This is the most I’ve enjoyed the football since the Sir Bobby years.’ “That history’s an inspiration. It shows everyone at the football club — myself, staff, players — what’s possible. The reason we get 30,000 crowds is the history of the club and the love of the club that is passed on from generation to generation. We’re now hopefully inspiring a new generation to come to the ground, enjoy the football and fall in love with the club again.” {Kieran McKenna}

History, apparently has a place in football on 08:52 - Oct 16 with 1303 views | NthQldITFC | I hope this doesn't get reposted on the Oink 'Un. The poor buggars have been hit pretty bad by the way we've somehow breached the 'massive gulf' between the third and second divisions. There's civil war over there with (probably a majority of) posters fairly effusive in their praise of all things ITFC and a handful of rabid holdouts screaming "BINNER!" and "Go and support them then!". Ever since I've been poking my nose in there it's been a small and turgid place by comparison with TWTD, with little in the way of proper left wing politics, awareness of football or social history, punning, or enjoyment of any kind really. But right now it's foetid in the extreme. Ha ha. [Post edited 16 Oct 2023 8:53]

I remember after they were relegated in 1995 and stuck in the same league until 2003 getting crud crowds too. They also only picked up once they went up again, and started doing kids for a quid to bump up numbers. Smart business model, but it doesn't make you a big club. [Post edited 16 Oct 2023 11:58]

History, apparently has a place in football on 13:23 - Oct 16 with 1016 views | Churchman | Basically, you can treat history as a barrier to overcome, a millstone or something to ignore (ripping the pictures down, ignoring ex players etc) or you can make it work for you. If you have one, use it and that’s precisely what McKenna and the owners are doing. Why not? A club’s history is as much a part of its identity as what it’s doing now. I see the difficulty for Norwich though. How can you make something of a rubber bone trophy, a vomit flecked kit, being laughed at in a Mike Bassett film after getting lost after winning the Mr Clutch cup and participating once in Europe. It’s not a lot to go on.

Norwich's legacy is having finished 3rd once, won a couple of league cups and in recent times been a very good second tier club which played decent football. We can't deny we haven't looked at some of what they did with envy giving the dross we were served up. None of that trumps what Ipswich have done, and our potential under gamechanger is limitless. They have a couple of failed MPs and celebrity funders doing their best.

I can distinctly remember our attendances being about 4-5k more than theirs after we were related to the Championship and they’d got promoted to PL. we had better average attendances than them for something like 4 seasons before we finally started to tail off.
