ITFC squad depth and current state 07:01 - Dec 30 with 914 views | PioneerBlue | It should be no surprise to anyone that a newly promoted side hasn’t had the time to reassemble its squad to ensure championship quality and depth. In the context of how the main starter-finisher squad has performed expectations have rightly risen. They have been nothing short of amazing. But why the outrage at sub performance when the squad is relied upon? PR and wider itfc fan club needs to refind its support for the cause pretty quickly as Leicester and Soton are waiting for no one. This part of the starter finisher squad works, 19 players, those with brackets work when limited to single changes unlike last night as part of significant rotation. Hladky, Walton, Clarke, Williams, Wolf, Tuanzebe, Burgess, (Edmundson), Leif, Morsy, Taylor, Luongo, (Ball), Burns, (Hutch), Chaplin, Harness, Broadhead, Hirst. Fit and firing that’s not bad place to be, however going forward and in midfield Hirst, Broadhead, Chaplin, Burns, Morsy all have no equal in the squad. At the back Leif has no equal. 5 of those 6 didn’t start last night. In the wider squad we have real challenges Ladapo, Jackson, Donacien, Evo is where this current 25 looks to be struggling. Evo injured and the others will not be making the jump mainly in critical attacking and high intensity positions. Over to you Mark Ashton.

ITFC squad depth and current state on 07:16 - Dec 30 with 864 views | Swansea_Blue | It takes time I suppose, as one of our strengths has been keeping the squad together. That’s ok when the main players are available but causes us issues when they’re not. Last night was an extreme example, but we also saw a slight drop off when Burns was missing with his shoulder injury. A bright point from the ‘reserves’ last night for me was Humphreys. He looked a bit lost in the first half, but really grew into the game and was pinging in Leif’s trademark square crosses by the end. Freddie wasn’t up to it (and arguably cost us the two points with his two early chances, especially failing to get his shot off with the first - that was awful). Harness loose in possession. Hutch was poor. Ball was ok, without being standout.

Humph' really improved as it went on, really good to see, didn't tire, started to get at his defender, a real plus from the game. A goal would have seen us win as they were no real threat, but there we go. Still ahead of where we thought we'd be (by a season???), so hopefully a few back for Stoke, Cup break, then onward with whatever the window delivers.
ITFC squad depth and current state on 09:25 - Dec 30 with 684 views | Guthrum | I think it was no so much a matter of quality differential, but dislocation. That particular team lineup do not work together often, many of the personnel being more used to coming on later in a game (individually or in small units) to tie things up than having to construct a performance from the start. Even the handicap of Broadhead dropping out in the warm-up, requiring yet another, last-minute reset. Not just the lack of familiarity, but so many key personnel were absent all at once. Morsy, the midfield kingpin. Davis and Burns, the energy and confidence on the flanks. Hirst, the anchor and exploiter up top. All men comfortable and confident in their roles. Takes time for others to develop that, however talented as footballers. Humphreys was noticeably taking ownership of his position at LB as the game went on. Hutchinson, on the other hand, seemed to be lacking some of his usual zip - perhaps not entirely well, given illness in the squad?

Indeed. As I mentioned on another thread, we made five changes for the Watford game and went there and won. There's a big difference though between planning on doing that and being able to prepare that side properly and what happened last night with so many last minute issues leaving us no time to really prepare the side effectively. That really showed last night. That we still could have won - Freddie had two one on ones, Harness a good chance that Begovic saved well - is pretty remarkable given what we were contending with. We had players starting last night who have not started all season in the league and others who haven't played much at all lately, it was always going to be disjointed. Feels like somewhat typical Ipswich luck to get through a tough run of fixtures relatively unscathed (Leeds aside) to then lose so many players at late notice for a more winnable fixture where we could really have done with the three points.
