It's a perfect storm of being one of this generations biggest talents and one of the only ones not locked down. Also a system that penalises spending huge sums (financial penalties only) and an extremely wealthy owner who quite frankly doesn't care about having to pay the luxury tax.*
* In baseball they have a "luxury tax" so that if you spend more than agreed limits, you have to pay a "tax" to the league, with the rate increasing upto a max of 50% after 3 consecutive years above the limit. The current Mets owner throws so much money around, they paid more of the "luxury tax" than the other 7 teams who did combined. $100m dollars just in extra "tax. Going to be even more now!
