Was just reading an article by Souness on Man Utd. What he say's applies to many a young professional footballer in that in a lot of cases too much too soon turns their heads. Their status is often overblown. They are legends in their own lunchtime. Why this is so important is that as we have seen so often in the past and will no doubt in the future see these so called "Superstars" come and go just as quickly. Players like our own such as Delap and Hutchinson need nurturing and guidance so they don't become the next superstar that disappears just as quickly. A good professional can have 15 years at the top, but many fall by the wayside a lot sooner. Obviously a club cannot chaperone a player 24 hours a day and then it's down to the individual to not allow bad influence from outside to sidetrack them. Which admittedly is a harder thing to control given the excess time and money profession players have. One reason why we have to be grateful we have a manager and CEO with their hands on the pulse and whilst you can have set agendas laid out for the type of player you sign it's never going to be 100%.
Graeme Souness admits that he use to go onto the field of play with the intention of braking an opposition players leg. I have absolutely detested the bloke ever since.
