Meanwhile in Gaza the terms of the deal change. 08:18 - Mar 2 with 878 viewsBanksterDebtSlave

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/2025/3/2/live-israel-us-propose-terms-to

'Israel stops the entry of all humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip after the first phase of the ceasefire deal ended without agreement on continuing into a second phase.'

....and the reason is clear.....

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/mar/01/gaza-ceasefire-talks-stall-as-egyp

'While the first phase of the ceasefire chiefly involved the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinians held in Israeli jails, an increase in aid deliveries and a retreat of Israeli troops from some positions, the second phase requires a complete Israeli withdrawal and a more enduring cessation of hostilities.

The withdrawal would first involve a pullback from the Philadelphi corridor along Gaza’s southern border with Egypt. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu had called control of the buffer zone a strategic necessity but agreed in January to complete the withdrawal from Philadelphi by the 50th day of the ceasefire agreement, 9 March.

Such a retreat could however trigger the collapse of his rightwing coalition which would in turn force new elections, in which Netanyahu’s political future would be uncertain.'

Sociopaths the lot of them.

So if I’m reading this right, there was never any way the Israelis wanted the ceasefire to go to a second phase because that’d threaten the Netanyahu government?

So the flip side is use the first phase to get as many hostages back then restart the smashing of Gaza to get Hamas out, subdue the remaining people then throw them out to turn the land into Israel’s next settlement or Trump’s GazaVegas.

Am I reading that right?

I would say that pretty much nails it. Hence the repeated efforts to get stage one to fail which has now morphed into extending it.

Not good news for the hostages either. Only 24 remain alive, with 39 presumed dead.

Many of those presumed dead would still be alive if Netanyahu had agreed to a ceasefire much earlier.

But then again, he doesn't really care for the plight of what are his own people. And he won't take responsibility for the failings in the lead up to 7 October.

Tho Trump will not be impressed if the peace breaks down. Makes him look bad.

There's a good chance this will get "ironed out" same as the last couple of interruptions in the ceasefire process were.

Trump will want whatever Netanyahu wants.

In my view that rules out phase 2 ever taking place, with the best that can be hoped for being extensions of the current ceasefire (ie. extension of phase 1). And he won't take any responsibility for the failings in the lead up to 7 October, something that many of the families feel very strongly about.

I don't think that first sentence is entirely true. Trump wants whatever will make him look best. To have "his" peace deal collapse is a loss of face.

His people will be pressuring both sides to get back to the negotiating table(s). Asking politically impossible things of Netanyahu is no more of a problem for Trump than bullying Zelensky. He really doesn't like people saying no to him.

Perhaps I should have said that both Trump and Netanyahu's long term interests are in line when it comes to the occupied territories, and there couldn't be an American president who is closer to Netanyahu.

And after all, Trump never built the wall or got Mexico to pay for it but his stance on things like this is popular, and his supporters don't really notice or care that his utterances don't come true. He also didn't stop the Ukraine war on his first day in office.

Trump will blame the Palestinians for not agreeing to the Vegas plan. They have brought it on themselves for not moving on. If he can blame the invasion of Ukraine on the Ukrainians simply for wanting a say in the future of their own country, he can certainly use October 7th for the attitude towards a future Palestine state, or lack of it.

As an aside, he's done a good job in distracting Europe from the situation in the Middle East.
