It’s been a long day. It’s been a good day, except for the result. No one really played badly for me today. You can point to moments, but it was one moment that made the difference and palace always had that in their locker. To go down to a goal at that moment after what felt like a gallant draw was a sickener. But we seem to be used to them this season. I’d love to know what McKenna was thinking at full time. He seemed to be the second or third person to applaud us in the away end and made a bee line for the fans. I still don’t think he’s lost anyone really, but it feels like the dream is slowly slipping away doesn’t it? There’s bright spots across the XI but there’s also the odd element where is Delap doesn’t shoot, Clarke doesn’t hesitate or Phillips doesn’t overhit one ball, we score etc. That seems to be the narrative of the season now. We just aren’t meant to be here, and we certainly aren’t meant to stay. Whether it’s a conspiracy, a deficiency or something else there is a point during every game where you feel it’s not enough to be better fans, better sports or whatever else. The home team will score, the home fans will then remember to actually make some noise and we will talk about “fine margins” and whatever else to no avail. It’s always great seeing friendly faces, having a beer or two and all that goes with it. By the time we got off at London Bridge the shirts disappeared and the beer took the edge off, it was almost like we hadn’t been to the game for a brief moment. Maybe that’s what it’s all about. The experience we’ve not had for two decades and the experience we’ve not had since McKenna was here of just going to the game for goings sake. Cos that’s what we do. | |
