It gets a fair bit of stick from some quarters. Monday morning early, my mum was carted up here in an ambulance to A&E with severe stomach pain. An MRI scan a few hours later revealed something I won’t go into but required major surgery that she would only have a small chance of surviving, so…..basically, it’s been controlled pain management and palliative care in the ward. I can only state from my experience how feckin wonderful everyone here has been, treating her and our family with nothing but kindness, compassion and respect. I’ve been here all day, every day this week dreading the call at night to come because the end is close. I went home to watch the football this evening and enjoyed it despite the performance and result as it felt like a little normality had returned. Couldn’t sleep earlier so phoned the hospital to see how she was, they have been brilliant and said I could come over if I wished, so I’m sitting here having arrived shortly after midnight, next to her now as I write this post, I’ve even had a reclining chair put bedside for a doze should I feel so inclined. She’s away with the fairies, but I think she knows I’m here. The end is probably closer than I want to believe, but feeling the calmest I’ve felt since Monday. Thank you West Suffolk Hospital and your fantastic support…..and thank you Ipswich Town Football Club. Remember when you get angry about the team, there really is more important stuff to worry about. | We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |

Received a very concerning call about an elderly friend on Tuesday afternoon but was able to visit her in the island's spick and span relatively new hospital three days later and spent an hour or so catching up as best we could under the circumstances. The game later on was interesting enough to take my mind off things but the sense of perspective that life threatening events brings makes football results less important. One of the things we talked about was how wonderful our national health service is, I know other states have excellent facilities but our ones are available to all. Hope your Mum defies the odds and comes home as soon as she is in better health.

They were so kind and supportive in his final hours, we will always be grateful for the care he and we received that day. So sorry to hear that you, your mum and your family are going through such a tough time. There really is more to life than a game of football, as you said. Wishing you all the best. You’re right though, football, although well down the list of ‘critical’ things to worry about, is an anchor point in our lives, reliably unreliable, but ITFC is that extended family. Played a big part when I lost my Mum back in 81, though how could you not love those boys anyway! Things will improve.
