But better this time. Unrestricted campaign spending is what has got the USA into such a mess in recent years. Anything which clamps down on that - especially the less traceable stuff - is good for the UK's democracy.

This is good news. Reform would have laundered 10s or maybe 100s of millions through this route if it hadn’t been closed down. There was no accountability.

Personally, I’d rather parties are only allowed to take a set membership fee from any individual and we’re given a modest campaign budget out of tax payer funds. All audited. The amount they spend campaigning is ridiculous and they’re all getting paid for access and influence. It’s corrupt at the moment. Politicians should be working for us.

I think a big part of the issue is the unpaid advertising. Reform/Farage/all the previous incarnations always have had media coverage far in excess of their support (until the support has caught up - although compare it to Green and LibDem coverage even now).

On top of that, Reform/Farage/etc has been very good at manipulating opportunities like what happened a couple of days ago. The amount of coverage he has got from it must be delighting him.

Yes, that’s a good point. The value of the coverage they get from the media isn’t part of this. If it was being costed in, the BBC alone would have given them £millions in free advertising. You can’t listen to the news shows on R4 or 5 Live without them having Reform front and centre of most shows and the news. And that’s before we start on QT making Farage a household name with his 5 billion appearances (maybe a slight exaggeration:))
