Is that right. I just assumed he was a ref as he’s being paid to assess all the refereeing decisions.

They always used to be the case, and I believe Darren refereed as high as the Conference level, but it changed around 10 years ago when they forced referees to commit to specialising as either referees or assistant referees at a much earlier stage in their career. Pretty much all L2 and above refs have committed to that career path before getting the gig now. |  | | |
