Talking to somenSunderland fans before the game on Sat, having a general chat, we covered the topic of transfers. I said that I've not really look too much at the precise details of their transfers last season.
Anyway...
They said even though they did bring in a lot of signings Le Bris said on a few times before last season started he wanted a squad of 15. What he meant was the '15' would form the base of his regular starting 11. He also said for the other 10 it would be predominantly from the championship squad. His aim was 1) keeping some players around who had built a connection to the club was paramount, 25 new squad players equals relegation. 2) a newly promoted club cannot attract 25 new players and keep the standard high. No top player comes to Sunderland (then) and be happy to be 3rd choice striker, for example.
They said his point was to have a successful, happy squad you need to retain some players who had been on the Sunderland journey for a couple if years.
I said swings and roundabouts, but as they said 'don't know, all we know is that approach meant we survived and actually qualified for Europe'
So maybe we have reached that stage, a couple of key signings at most.
I also had to laugh I said if we don't bring in another striker and Emersonn is injured then I'm unsure about Akpom. Their response was and if you sign another striker and both are injured you're playing Akpom. I joked and said we'll sign a third top striker, as they said Sunderland couldn't, we get 47,000 for home games you get 29,000 if we couldn't attract a top 3rd striker you won't be able to. |  | | |

Furlong & Philogene keep.
Agree with Mehmeti, AAH, Ogbene, Humphreys as departures but would also add Taylor and Palmer to that list.
Sign a #8 (Palacios?) and a #9 (feck knows who). Ideally a 10/RW alternative as well and maybe a defensive addition.

The 15 man squad thing isn't new. As long as we do not have too many injuries and suspensions, then 15 is right.
GK rarely injured.
Settled back 4 who play vast majority of games. (versatile back up)
CM of 2 (more than adequate replacement)
ATM of 3 (versatile back up)
CF (more than adequate back up)
If we can stay mainly injury free, then that is what we need. A settled starting 11 is our best chance of survival. The other 11 in the squad can play cup games and if needed in the league. |  |

GK, I make you right unless someone comes in for Palmer with a fee, in which case Button signs his contract and is 3rd Keeper. If not, he gets released on Tuesday evening as an out of contract player.
Not sure we won't try to add to LB. If Davis gets injured for any length of time, that's a lot to put on a young kid.
You need to move Nunez back into the DM position I think and I still think both Taylor and Humphreys will leave the club this season in some capacity. Taylor obviously the more difficult to move on though. So one into the No8 position.
Philogene isn't going anywhere without a big bid, and last we knew, was in a boot, so unlikely to move on. You might see Clarke moved on but again, for a very big fee. (No reasoning to this, just a hunch)
I think we'll see 2 or 3 come in as the absolute maximum. two of those on a season long loan and those two will be the jaw on the floor moments. (again, pure hunch), but the closer we get to the end of the window, the more likely that we are talking loan signings rather than permanent ones.
