Interesting map of second most populas nationals in each EU country on 12:03 - Jun 23 with 1333 views | Guthrum | While a lot of those make sense given historical/colonial links, some do not (Romanians in Spain or Ukrainians in the Czech Republic, for example). And Turkey/Kurdistan is cheating rather, given the latter is not actually an independent nation, but instead a cross-border ethnic group and a large number of nominally Turkish citizens identify as Kurds (indeed regard themselves as living in an occupied territory).

Hmm, I've always thought there has been a large contingent of Romainians in Spain due to the fact that linguistically, it’s easier for Romanians in Italy and Spain and they are descended from Romans who displaced the Dacians, hence the name of the country.

It would also be interesting to see how that changed over time, especially in cases where there was only a small difference between the largest grouping and those in second place.

Speaking a Romance language would, indeed, probably help in learning Spanish. Altho the Goths displaced the Romans from the 3rd century, then Slavs after that. Probably, like France, linguistic rather than ethnic continuity.
