Athens Marathon, Blog 3 18:44 - Jul 12 with 1872 views

My third blog on running the Athens Marathon in November, for MIND, the mental health charity. I talk about when I ran the Manchester Marathon in 2014, how different things were then, and how determined I to nail Athens and do every penny of every donation justice.

Excerpt: Last time I tried to run a marathon, in 2014, I was not in the best place (that’s not a dig at Manchester, I’m talking figuratively). I can look back and laugh now, at the ridiculousness of it all. Training was intermittent at best, selfish at worst. I was scared, skint, depressed and ignorant. The previous day, I had 6 cans of lager and a curry, and took a last minute overnight mega-bus from London to Manchester. I couldn’t sleep. Months of denial had come to an end, and a knifing realisation that I now had to complete a serious endurance event had begun to stab away at me. It took me 5 hours and 58 minutes to complete the course. Maybe, all things considered, that’s not bad. Though if I am frank, it didn’t, and still doesn’t, feel much of an achievement.
