He is of course 100% correct that he returns to the team whatever the result, but does the negatively impact the player coming in to fill his place tomorrow?

Not a MM dig, got enough of those, but just a bit of an odd one for me

the player filling in will know the captain 'has' to return, but you'd like to think physiologically he'd be thinking 'this is my chance I have to make this position mine'

I think in this case it’s pretty immaterial unless he plays anyone other than Tommy Smith, who I assume is still recovering from injury? If he uses Spence, Knudsen or Iorfa, they will know that their default position under MM is not Centre-back and if he sprang a surprise and picked Luke Woolfenden, the boy would be looking to set down a marker for the future, nothing more.
