That Sheffield fly past... 16:31 - Feb 22 with 1271 viewsPendejo

anyone notice why he was in the park?

"Mr Foulds said he and the other children were in the park 75 years ago because boys from two rival junior schools were fighting."

Good old fashioned school v school brawl

Can't remember that sort of thing at primary school, but certainly can remember the stuff at secondary school. v the 2 nearest other schools one of which was across the road.

They were playing football and the plane flew over. The bomber was waving his hands to tell the boys to get out of the park so that they could try and land there. The boys thought they were waving hello at them so stayed and waved back. The plane circled 3 times and then crashed into the trees killing all 10 airmen on board. Tony has been to the memorial virtually every day since to tend to it. Today is the 75th anniversary of the crash and Dan Walker and the American bases in England organised the flypast to honour the 10 servicemen and the sacrifice they made to save the boys life. Wonderful heart warming story.

The whole thing is an awesome story that’s come about from Dan Walker walking his dog!!! I hope it gives Tony some closure as he’s spent his life suffering from survivors guilt. An incredible gesture to him and the serviceman.

I often cycle past the old WW2 airfield at Langham, there is a beautifuly kept memorial to the service men.

You cant imagine how brave these airmen and of course all of the other service men were.

We must never forget.

Confirmed by the war dairy of the Eighth Airforce, 43 planes lost and 4 written off after landing,
799 planes dispatched only 99 actually bombed their targets due to bad weather!
