Resumption of footy and players contracts 08:19 - Apr 21 with 580 views | GeoffSentence | If football does resume this season, the remaining games will be played way after the season would have ended. What happens with player contracts that expire by then? Are there any players that we could be without if the season resumes in , for example, June?

He was saying despite FIFA/UEFA saying contracts can be extended, legally he's been told that players have no obligation to.

Interesting, I wonder if we will see some short term extensions agreed. Given that clubs, at least at our level, will be seriously short of cash at the moment players won't be able to bargain for better contracts eleswhere quite so easily.

I'd have thought players would not be in a hurry to leave unless they had somewhere actually lined up to go to. Otherwise they might find themselves in a jobless limbo where clubs cannot afford to take on many new players just at the moment Also, they might be better off collecting a few more weeks wages at old contract levels, rather than those of the new, more impoverished world which football (outside, perhaps, the Prem) may be entering.

On the flip side, if they extend their contract by 1/2 months, play and get an injury then they potentially damage their chances of a contract elsewhere.

If I was a manager looking for signings, not sure I'd want in my squad someone that scared of getting injured they didn't want to play! Plus a decent player coming back from injury as a free agent is always going to be an attractive prospect. Assuming clubs can afford to sign players at all, pretty sure they would have multiple offers on the table.

The Football League clubs will all be financially knackered as they will be missing match day revenue, which is a far larger part of their income. They will be desperate to cut costs - hence some of the Championship clubs quickly agreeing pay cuts. Unless football starts soon - which is highly unlikely - the PL clubs won't be much better off as most of them will have committed to spend the 2019-20 season's income. some of this may be clawed back by broadcasters or, more likely, withheld from next season's pay out. They will also be losing match day & sponsorship revenue. With the players only agreeing to small wage cuts (mainly deferrals) the clubs won't be in a position to offer juicy new contracts. I think a massive day or reckoning is due in football, but we won't really see how it plays out until we get to contract deadline day in June.
