Five Live Monday night club 21:45 - Oct 12 with 641 views | Matt_Netherlands | No surprises what they are talking about. Just had my two polarising chairmen on in Darragh McAnthony and Stephen Pearce from Derby. Given Derby’s catastrophic failures at gambling for promotion for many years, Pearce was hugely in favour of the proposals which I found a little strange, given it cuts their chances of going up by a third. McAnthony on the other hand, less keen on the proposals but had a pop at the government cor supporting the arts, but not football! Also waxing lyrical about the salary cap. According to him, L1 clubs would receive £5m a year and championship clubs £22m a year! From what they’ve said however, for once I feel marginally reassured that we’re hopefully in the bucket of clubs who are run the right way and not one of the ones taking a risk for gambling on success.

At the moment it's the sheer desperation to get promoted to the Prem that bankrupt everyone. BTW I'm not in favour of the proposals.

The odd thing being that promotion to the Prem is no financial silver bullet. Yes, there is a whole lot more money coming in, but the outgoings increase massively, too (wages, transfer fees). If all clubs in the top tier made huge profits and erased their debts, there would be no need for parachute payments. The actual motivation is often so that owners can sell up and realise thier investment (or, at least, recoup their losses).
