It seems to me that the night time/day time readings on my meter have switched. The meter was installed by my last supplier and the day time rate was ticking over at about 4 times the night time rate. I moved supplier and initially tha stayed the same, the new supplier didnt support the smart meter, but in August they 'enabled' it. Since then, or probably since then, the night time rate has been ticking over much faster than the day time rate, and in fact it appears to be racking up during the day. The rates are called IMP R01 and IMP R02 on the meter (nice and user friendly) and I was wondering if when a supplier 'enables' a smart meter they have the capability to screw it up and switch the rates round?

No mate, they cannot control the smart meter, but have probably screwed up the installation. I would ask them back to check their work. Your day time reading at 4 times the night time reading sounds just about spot on. Nothing you can change, I don't think, so get them back to correct it.

I do not know much about those things but may I stick my nose in briefly and suggest if you can to contact them by email? Just to have your concerns and their replies in writing if you can. Some years ago I received a couple of horrendous energy bills and Eon argued they were correct, even though it was obvious they weren't! It took me months of harassing them to get back 400 quid they'd overcharged me through a faulty meter.

Happily at the moment any error is in my favour as I am being charged night rate for the energy I use in day time, nevertheless this seems like wise advice.

First generation smart meters always had that issue when moving providers, something they forgot to mention when they told you how fantastic they are at helping you save energy. That is also why a lot of people refused to move to the original smart meters. The second generation fixed that problem but there are still a lot of 1st generation smart meters out there.

How can you tell if a meter is first or second generation.

Serial number on meter. 19P is first and 19M is second. I think that is right anyway.

On my day/night meter, R1 is night, R2 is day. To tell if they've got it correct, go and do a reading at an obviously "day" time or obviously "night" time, whichever is more convenient to you. The one currently being used will *flash* "R2". Ovo who installed my day/night meter 7 years ago did wire it the wrong way round, took me 2 yrs of hassle to get a refund - their CS was terrible (now switched to Green Energy, who are much, much better).

In this case R02 was racking up more units during the day as I would expect until my new supplier, bulb, 'enabled' the meter, since then R01 has been racking units up during the day. I imagine it will be quicker to sort this out as currently I will be paying less than I should.

That's a clear sign Bulb have got it the wrong way round. Fingers crossed for you - the real test of any supplier/producer/retailer is how they deal with any problems/complaints.
