Our lack of a threat going forwards 08:00 - Mar 29 with 995 viewsIPSWICHFANITFC

Isn't really surprising when you look at the squad...

- We have one goal scorer in the squad who we heavily rely on for goals. We don't create enough clear chances - more through balls to Norwood like the assist Edwards gave him at Portsmouth and better crosses into the box. More clear chances = more goals.

- Only a few ball carriers in the squad - KVY, Teddy Bishop and Gwion Edwards. Ball carriers are such an important part when trying to beat a low block or create space for others. We miss more of these players and again rely on Bishop to break lines from midfield.

- A lack of movement and creativity from the '3' behind the striker. When do they ever run beyond the striker? Or play in pockets for Dozzell to fizz a pass in to a dangerous area to get turned?

- No consistent wide threat. Bennetts lacks the final ball and end product. Edwards is better on the left, and when he's confident he's really good. When he's not, he's average. New wingers are a must in the summer. They have to have a goal threat.

Big summer for Cook recruitment wise and a big task on making this count on the training pitch to take into games. I'd like to see Harrop play behind the striker more though whilst we have him.

Poll: If selling Jackson meant getting in a wide man, would you be happy with Garbutt?

The midfield area is a huge problem, but the fact we have a few of our own youth products in it makes it even tougher to accept or acknowledge. That area of the pitch offers very little, apart from sporadic spells in games, which isn’t enough to be successful as we haven’t got the ability to dictate games, however much some wax lyrical over certain individuals in there. They don’t create, score goals or even get beyond that final striker to be a threat, their impact on the game is very minimal. We’ve always had this problem with the gap between the striker and midfield in recent seasons, but I do feel that stems from our defence playing too deep so we don’t push up the field as a collective unit. PC’s Portsmouth side had a terrific 3 behind the main striker which offered plenty of movement, threat, pace, support and they all scored goals regularly, which made them successful, all aspects we are currently lacking. I still feel that our team needs major surgery all over the pitch, but the little impact of the midfield and that includes our deep lying midfielders too, has become more evident as the weeks have passed.

I think at Portsmouth he had 3 guys he can trust in roles behind the striker who then later ended up at Wigan - Jamal Lowe, Gary Roberts and Kal Naismith.

At Wigan he also had Michael Jacobs, Will Grigg, Nick Powell, Gavin Massey, Josh Windass, Anthony Pilkington and Jamie Walker.

Every name (except Roberts obviously) I have mentioned there gets into our 11 right now - yet most of these were at the club together. The quality there compared to the quality here is massive.

I would not be too surprised to see a couple names above come here in the summer - Gavin Massey, Michael Jacobs maybe, Jamie Walker maybe, Kal Naismith perhaps though he's doing well at Luton so that would be a massive coup to bring him here.

No point in trying to integrate Harrop as he is unlikely to be at Town next season as he signed a new contract with PNE.
Otherwise - agree. Norwood remains isolated, Edwards is inconsistent & has lost form & Sears - a bizarre selection - offers no threat at all. I would like to see Teddy Bishop in the no.10 role as he will drive forwards & run at players. However, no good options to play alongside Dozzell on Saturday.

I agree Harrop won't be here next season, but not many of them will be here next season at this rate. He's going to be technically better than most, maybe not as match fit. I'd play him No10 from the start to spark something.

Next season I totally agree re Bishop. I thought he was excellent there against Lincoln carrying the ball, dribbling and committing players - then dropped vs Plymouth, Downes hamstring and now is forced into the deeper less effective role. He's got the ability to play there.

Next season I hope Downes - Dozzell as a double pivot works with Bishop just ahead. Though I think if we the management team can coach Downes' ball carrying ability and add this to his game then we will have a fantastic player on our hands.

Downes looks the best bet out of all of them, he could be the box to box midfielder we are desperately looking for. For me, our midfield should be built around him in going forwards. The rest I'm nonplussed about, they just don't influence games enough and we aren't talking about young lads anymore.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.
