The Sheriff Tiraspol squad 23:10 - Aug 25 with 913 viewsSharkey

...must have the most colourful collection of national flags of any in history.

Not too shabby to beat Red Star Belgrade and Dynamo Zagreb.

Reflective of the weird politics of Transnistria, I think? It's basically the flag-bearer for an unrecognised (Russian-aligned) state within Moldova and benefits from the main industrial conglomerate using it for political purposes.

You seem to understand roughly what Transnistria is - I must say, I can't really grasp it at all, even with Wikipedia's help.

I notice there is another club from Tiraspol in the Moldovan top league, and I wonder what that derby is like.

Short version:

The Soviet Union ethnically cleansed and colonised a piece of Moldova, during and shortly after WW2 (partially because some of the population collaborated with the Nazis). When the Soviet Union collapsed, its ethnically Russian population did not want to form part of Moldova.

They had a brief war about it (1991-92), then signed a ceasefire between the new Russian state, Moldova and the Transnistrians, which was a peculiar compromise where Transnistria was in practice an independent state, but recognised internationally as part of Moldova.

In lots of ways quite similar to what happened in the Crimea with Ukraine.

I went there a few years back, for New Year’s Eve. Totally bonkers place. Fireworks started going off at 10pm which was a bit odd, but then we realised that was Moscow time.

Got smashed with my mate and some locals and sang karaoke a Capella as they didn’t have any English songs.

On New Year’s Day none of the ATMs worked as the transnistiran dollar exchange rate is set daily by the government and as it was a public holiday they hadn’t done it. Luckily my mate had some euros and the casino were happy to oblige the exchange.

Scariest part of the evening was heading to a swanky (Russian) nightclub with a guy we’d met. Had been chatting small talk for a bit and my mate asked him what he did for a living. He replied “don’t ask people here what they do, there are people here who kill people.” After a very long pause he put his hand on my friend’s shoulder, winked and said “only joking”. We were both pretty terrified from that moment on but all in all a good trip!
