It’s a feature of this squad and its performances I’ve noticed that sometimes we seem to be much worse at keeping the ball and the pressure on the opposition, and sometimes much better. This will have a lot to do with the opposition and how good they are at defending/disrupting but I think there’s an even stronger link between that and our lineups, and particularly the choice of three behind Bonne. Individually, we need the unpredictability of Celina, the directness of Burns and the even more mercurial Edwards. But did we get the balance right yesterday with all three? Aluko for example keeps the ball better than anyone. Fraser joins up our attacks and can play in his teammates like no-one else. And Chaplin can do a bit of everything but most importantly he causes a nuisance and pushes up to Bonne. I think trying to balance the maverick quality of the first three with a bit of the control and consistency that the second three give us would be a good way to go in future. They’re all potentially match-winners but I think they all need to be complemented by players who can do the other stuff. | |
