Last nights 10-0 thrashing of San Marino got me thinking. Hypothetically if they could enter a tournament and have any chance of winning it, the FA Vase would probably be the standard at which they would be competative.
That season when Diss Town became the winners, beating Taunton 2-1 at Wembley, the team consisted of an ageing Peter Mendham, Paul Warne and Paul Gibbs who both went on to have lower league professional careers, the former the current Rotherham manager, and a good blend of young and experienced players under the managment of Bill Punton who had a decent playing career at Newcastle, Norwich and Sheffield Utd among others..
I was at the final along with about 12,000 or so others supporting Diss that afternoon and what a great day it was for not only the town, but also for the Eastern Counties League.
Anyhow, the conclusion i have come to is that Diss team would have beaten the current San Marino one.
