Looked a stretch for them to be in the race given there will likely be a chunky fee involved, along with competition on salary from ourselves and Championship clubs.

Yes. They were never in the race for Hirst.

They couldn't afford to buy him and if he was being loaned out it would likely be to one of the interested Championship clubs.

Some might argue they were in the race but piecing together the comments it's pretty clear they were never serious contenders.

FWIW I don't expect us to get him either.
