M4 closure at Reading - alternative route 04:08 - Sep 25 with 838 viewsLegendofthePhoenix

As I live in Reading, I got caught in this last night. M4 westbound closed between J 11 and J 12 - massive queues even at 10 pm.

I would suggest leave the M25 at the M3 towards Basingstoke/M27, or take the M40 (Oxford/Birmingham) leaving at J6 (Lewknor) then take the B4009 via Benson/Wallingford to join the A34 at Chilton, then down the A34 for 6 miles to join the M4 at Chieveley.

Good luck.

ps - only closed westbound, you should be ok for the return journey to stay on the M4.

M3 has roadworks at Winchester so be careful. Also once you get off the M27 the roads are horrible going west

The M40 route is a good one. It's more direct, and not too much faffing about on the small roads.

If you go via M3 you come off it at A303 just after Basingstoke. You won't get as far as Winchester.

Suggesting going via M27 is bad advice unless you live in or around Southampton.

A14>>M6>>M42>>M5>>then usual A road into Plymouth.

This route is an absolute gem. It’s only 27miles further . But minimal traffic jams , lovely smooth journey . I’ll never do the M25/M4 route again !

M42 fairly often slow/stopped, M5 can be horrendous, especially around Bristol. But would likely be ok early on a Sunday morning. And likely still better than going round London whatever.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?
