I read the book last week. Despite being a translation and written a long time ago, it’s easy to read and excellent - very much recommended, if you’ve not done so.

I found the boys laughing (looking more like maniacs) more troublesome to watch than the gore.
I thought it was meant to show them losing their minds at war, but they have them laughing like crazed people even before they leave their home town.

The book is a fine thing.

The film's ending, in my view, sacrifices the banality of Paul's death in the book for a soppy ending that grates when set against the realism of the rest of the film. |  |
