They've found him. I dunno if he'll remember you; I don't know much about tortoises' memories.

I remember my first childhood pet. It was a guinea pig called Sam.

He got killed by a neighbour's dog. Mind you he didn't have a large protective shell.

I always pronounce that as "tortus" rather than "tor-toys"
How about you?
Am I wrong?

No I'm with you, that's how I say turtle too.

Facters will put us right with some personal experience from the original naming ceremony I suspect.

Edit: I think there's possibly a third option; like an Italian/American gangster type effort that falls somewhere between the two.

Our tortoise disappeared when in the garden, and we only discovered him later that day floating upside in our pond.

Was he ok?

Was he doing the backstroke?

Sadly not.

Interestingly, I once fell in the same pond at lunchtime and missed an afternoon's school.

That's the way they taught us to pronounce it at school.

Pardon my ignorance here, but I presume I am right in thinking that a tortoise must be begat from an egg, a la turtles? If so, how does the mother get up the tree to make the nest?
