Set plays 08:54 - Apr 9 with 696 viewsSharkey

I must admit, I thought the term 'set plays' was a pretty new (and unnecessary / unwelcome/!) Americanisation of football terminology, replacing the 'set pieces' I grew up with.

So I'm surprised to hear Bobby Robson, presumably in his Porto days. ('94-96), using it here (at 5.42)

A number of Americanisms are actually old Anglianisms (even East Anglianisms, e.g. "Fall" for autumn) which have merely fallen out of use here.

On a similar note I had never heard low block until a couple of months ago. Now I hear it in virtually every conversation about football.
