Recently picked up some old Town match day programmes in a charity shop. Couple of items in one dated September 4, 1973 (Newcastle United) are interesting
In the ‘Charlie Woods with the youths…’ column a bit about a new apprentice from Scotland by the name of John Wark. A 16 year old ‘…centre-half…quick on the turn, good in the air and has good control…Let’s hope that John has a happy and successful career at Portman Road’. Any idea what happened to him?
On the same page a bit about standing tickets for the UEFA Cup first round match against Real Madrid being on sale at the turnstiles at that nights’ match … for 75p. How times have changed |  |

Interesting that Warky is described as a centre half at that age. I was a little too young to remember his first spell with Town, and what I remember most is his third spell, in which he was indeed much more defensively minded. I remember being astounded to hear for the first time of his amazing goalscoring feats, especially in the UEFA cup season and also at Liverpool.
So I had always assumed that he started off as a more mobile, attack-minded midfielder.
Either way, he clearly had a decent 'tache at 16... |  | | |

Me too! I was in the tiny stand behind the goal Woods curled the winner into. I actually heard and saw Clarke abusing Wark in the first half, though I didn’t see him spit in his face tbf.
Wark looked too small to be a CH. ‘Never make the grade’ said my dad and I. ‘Never see him again’ etc.
That prediction didn’t go too well. Thank goodness! What a good player. |  | | |
