The trouble with our footballers. 17:10 - Jun 27 with 730 viewsOldFart71

The trouble with our footballers compared to those from places like Georgia and the Ukraine are that they are too privileged. They get paid far to much in a lot of cases far too soon. Every football tournament they are proclaimed as the greatest of a generation only to fail. They don't put in the effort like Georgia did. Class counts for nothing if the effort is not there. Two seasons now we as Town supporters have seen enormous effort from everyone and because of that we have rightly gained our place in the Prem. I do feel many of the England players would rather be on the beach than over in Germany. I have some sympathy as our football has too many competitions, too many games, too geared to fit in with Sky tv and nothing is done to completely allow for the build up to World Cups and European Championships. Many players required for England are pulled out due to injury, but I suspect it's more to do with up and coming League games. We saw the effects on Kieffer Moore.

Let’s not forget that in the last few years those privileged footballers have reached the semi-finals and final of major tournaments. Many on here bang on about football in the 70s and 80s but those footballers were bigger failures. Indeed this is England’s previous teams attempts at the Euros.

1972 Did not qualify
1976 Did not qualify
1980 Group stage
1984 Did not qualify
1988 Group stage
1992 Group stage

I know that there were fewer teams in the Euros but the above record is quite poor.

The present team have qualified for the second phrase and so there’s all to play for still.

In terms of Ipswich we have a very able and competent coaching team. If those players who have excelled for the last couple of seasons had a less able manager etc then we might still be in L1. It’s all about tactics etc rather than privilege.

Also don't forget we lost all 3 group games in 88 - just imagine the attacks on Southgate if we had lost all three games this time.

We also didn't win a group game in 92
