What power does Macron have? 10:30 - Dec 4 with 374 views | nodge_blue | And does the Presidential system work? (Forgetting about football - we are probably going down peeps - and here's my thought for the day instead) I see that Barnier has a vote of no confidence today as French PM and is likely to lose. So on that basis Im not sure if his budget still goes through on this forced through route or not. But either way its triggered a vote of no confidence in Barnier. So Macron may then have to appoint another PM, who will not be able to satisfy all the parties and will not be able to get their controversial legislation through either. So what's the point of Macron? He presumably is unable to set a political agenda. He cant control parliament. He looks just like a figurehead. Isn't this an argument against proportional representation? It makes democracy look weak at a time its least needed. France needs a direction to go in but instead its going nowhere pulled about by opposing parties in parliament who have enough weight to nullify each other. [Post edited 4 Dec 2024 10:33]

What power does Macron have? on 12:48 - Dec 4 with 298 views | Pinewoodblue | The electoral system used in France is the absolute opposite to proportional representation. It is a two step, first past the post system. In the second round only candidates who polled more than 12.5% in the first round are on the ballot. In effect most voters end up voting against the candidate they least want to represent them. You get lots of deals, at local level. Take Ipswich Constituency for example. In the second round both Lib Dem & Green candidates would drop out. The seat would then be contested by Labour, Conservative & Reform. Result would no doubt be the same Lib Dem & Green supporters, if they bothered to vote a second time, would have voted anything but Tory. The system favours the larger parties and squeezes the centre. Macron is ineligible to stand for re-election. It seems likely the next Presidential election will come down to a straight choice, extreme left or extreme right. | |
