Hold on to your manager 15:20 - Jan 13 with 1545 viewsflykickingbybgunn

Since 1936 when we joined the Football League, we have had 19 managers. I make that an average of just over one every 4 years 7 months.

I have made a short list of clubs with indications of numbers of managers since 1936.
Some managers that went away and returned I have counted as two. (Change of manager)
Some have dual managers, again two. I have not counted this season's changes.
Unsurprisingly successful teams tend to have settled management.

Number of managers since 1936
Arsenal 13 (one every 7 years 5 months)
Liverpool 16
Man Utd 16
West Ham 18
Ipswich 19
Tottenham 21
Everton 23
Portsmouth 36
Southampton 36
Norwich 37
Hull 39
Swansea 42
Northampton 42
QPR 45
Tranmere 46
Carlisle 46
Watford 49 (8 of those during the time that KMcK has been here)
Notts County 59
Barrow 68 (one every 16 months)

Then I started to look at what I call the "Half life of recent managers"  Meaning taking 13 managers as the Arsenal have. How far back from 2025 in time does 13 managers get you.

Arsenal        1934
Liverpool      1959 (Shankly)
Man Utd       1969 (Wilf McGuiness. (14 managers takes it back to 1945 Matt Busby))
Ipswich         1982 (Bobby Ferguson. (14 managers takes it back to 1968 Robson))
West Ham     1990
Everton        1994
Norwich        2000
Carlisle         2001
Tottenham    2001
Northampton 2003
Portsmouth   2005
Hull                2006
Southampton 2008
QPR             2009
Swansea      2009
Tranmere      2009
Notts County 2012
Barrow 2013
Watford          2017 (averaging just over 6 months each)

If you want to know the number of managers since 1936 for another specific team then let me know and I will count it up. But just for now I am starting to lose the will to live from counting so many names so give me a moment

I think there was a period of time where clubs like Watford, Nottingham Forest had had more managers this millennium than we'd had in our history.

(maybe before Paul, Paul and Paul)

repeating earlier question, how many of our managers were actually sacked? Think its only 6 or 7?

Under the Cobbold patronage we were very stable, they appointed and supported managers whatever. They also made good choices, possibly Jackie Milburn was the weakest but he was still not sacked, he insisted on leaving and always insisted on fond memories of the club. Since then the guidance has not been great hence the arrival of players like Bowyer, Chopra and Thatcher. Can you imagine John Cobbolds reaction if Robson had suggested the signings. Standards fell.

Milburn decided to leave and Ferguson was just not offered another contract.

I did think it was either BF or Duncan that was the first. Sounds like a double act!
