Woodworkers/physicists - what's the score here? 20:21 - Mar 14 with 559 views | NthQldITFC | I'm drilling holes through horizontal pine beams to support round section aluminium tubing (in the other horizontal dimension), which will be load bearing. I'm trying to work out whether to drill in the middle of the beams, or slightly higher or slightly lower. Now, I know (or believe that I know) that wood is generally stronger in compression than tension, which would tend to suggest that the holes ought to maybe be a bit above the centre line. Correct? I don't think it's critical, I just tend to get a bit obsessed about things like this. |  |

Problem with pine is much of it - especially from the likes of B&Q or Wickes - is so wide grain that you get lines of weakness, which could cause the rails, if very heavily loaded, to split the wood. Extra support/screws for the timber will help that. I'm picturing a sort of rack/shelf arrangement. |  |
