That Watford game on reflection 15:25 - Nov 9 with 1174 viewsStuartSlater

Okay I know the history books will say it was a point ... But for me it was one of those games that made me feel confident. If we can get a few more goals coming
From the strikers and taking their chances and they will.... Then I think we will be good this season.

Poll: Craig Bellamy - Bell end or Misunderstood

Weirdly I think we played some of the best footbal we've played against Watford this season and on another night would have won comfortably.

Agreed. And I was also bemoaning our missed chances in the first half at Swansea. We could have had a few before we actually scored, and we don't yet have that goal scorer or scorers who regular put those chances in the net.
Frustrating at times that we don't take advantage when we're on top. Ended well on Saturday. Not so well against Watford.

Speaking to a Watford supporting colleague after the game his view was that we were the best team he had seen all season. On another day we would be sitting here off the back of three consecutive 4-1 wins

Not even with the benefit of hindsight, some of us were saying after the game that we played pretty well and we did. You don’t always get the result you deserve but the performances in this 3 game week against 3 pretty middling sides has been encouraging.

The reaction from a lot of fans after the Watford game was pathetic. The criticism and moaning was way over the top.
Disappointment in the result I get, I was disappointed too, but anyone who understands football would have seen we were excellent in that game and should have won it comfortably. We played some great football in that 2nd half.

The performance v Watford was better than either of the games v OPR or Swansea but that is the nature of football.

For anyone in doubt that this team and improving should look at the 10 game form table. Considering I don’t think we have reached anywhere near our potential I think we are in a very good place. In McKenna we trust.

Poll: Is it now time to sack Paul Cook?

Because the result of a match is entirely a function of the goals scored by each team, it is easy to attribute too much importance to goals.

However, I really think that there is a great danger of doing the opposite, and treating goals as somehow incidental.

Maybe you don't always get the result you deserve. A bad ref call, an unlucky bounce, whatever. But getting shots on target is a crucial part of the game, and ensuring that some of those on target go in is also a crucial part of the game. Having really really poor percentages on those key skills is not luck, and is not a mere detail. You deserve to win if you deserve more goals. You deserve more goals if you're getting more shots on target of good quality. Game after game we have found ourselves with many many shots, many many touches in the box, but with a worryingly low number of shots on target.

If we're missing lots of our chances, some think we deserved to win. It seems to me that that is based on the notion that if we had stuck our chances away on an average, or reasonably expected basis, we would have won.

The conclusion from a game like Watford, or Boro, or Charlton, should be that unless we learn to stick our chances away on an average or reasonably expected basis, we will not win, and will not deserve to win.

Of course I'm delighted at three wins in four games, and there is much to be cheerful about. But a brace of own goals, and a brace of direct free kick goals will not come around very often. We need the bread and butter chances to be stuck away. Azon did it with his header against Swansea - fantastic for him, fantastic for us. But we are pretty reliant on excellence by Clarke and Philogene when we should be able to rely on daily bread from Akpom, SS, McAteer, Egeli, and dare I say it, Nunez (in open play). And of course Azon, although it seems churlish to raise it now he's got on the scoresheet.

If that lot can increase their shots on target percentages to somewhere near the lofty heights of our attacking talent like Kipre and Greaves, then we will go up automatically.

I agree with the assessment "pretty middling sides". All 6 of our wins have come against sides currently 14th placed or below. We've still got to play the majority of the top six. I will choose to view that as an opportunity, but we must be clinical against those sides!
