For and Against McKenna 22:19 - Dec 2 with 299 viewsitfc_statman

Naturally in the emotional aftermath of a bad result its difficult not to be swayed but as a non-attending fan but watches nearly all matches from afar...

The Good:

- Tonight aside, most games we've failed to win we've still created more than the opposition and probably should have won them.
- We've seen McKenna at his best. And him at his best is better than we could likely attract.
- We have an expensively assembled, deep squad. But it wasn't McKenna who negotiated some of the pretty stupid fees we've paid for good but not exceptional players.

The Bad:

- Style is...dull. You can deal with that when its effective but its not been effective enough this season. It feels rigid and all a bit boring.
- Whilst we are creating more than the opposition it feels down to individual quality rather than anything the manager is necessarily creating.
- Its a really poor division this year in context. This is a harder one to really prove but our squad should really be absolutely dominating this league
- The best manager in the league this season is Frank Lampard. That is the biggest insult to McKenna you'll read on here today

My personal view is changing him doesn't change a huge much in terms of where we finish but it could be a bit more exciting. As it stands though I don't think its a risk worth taking and I don't trust Mark Ashton to get another appointment right.

It really feels like McKenna’s constant squad rotation is just not working and is causing a lot of the angst in the fanbase. It’s clearly not working and is having a detrimental effect on results. We now have a squad of players short on form and confidence, rigidly sticking to one way of playing with even the occasional off the cuff individual brilliance we saw earlier in the season seemingly now elusive. Unless they are called Davis, O’Shea or Matusiwa, all the outfield players know however well they play that they will be benched the next game. This rigidity is costing us points.
Please Mr McKenna pick a line up for Saturday of the best player for each role on Saturday and injury or suspension permitting stick to that lineup for the next few games and let them try something different in games

I don’t understand how a manager can keep players motivated if they play well and yet lose their place in the following game. No matter what way McKenna paints it, it can’t be helping the player’s confidence.

Couldn’t agree more.
We started with our second team front 4 tonight and it really showed.
Mcateer tried hard and had a few moments, but Azon, Akpom and Clarke were just awful.
To be fair at the moment I am not sure anyone has nailed down a place as a definite starter other than may be O’Shea, but he has to pick his best team and stick with it, cos at the moment they all look like strangers to each other.
No patterns of play, no energy, no encouraging each other, no fun.
