But I wasn’t reading much earlier in the summer. Yesterday’s result made me take a little look at his previous stints in the Premier League.
With teams he has kept up, it’s rather interesting to see the goal difference of those Bournemouth and Wolves sides. Even discounting the 9-0 loss to Liverpool, his team conceded a lot of goals and had a worse GD than the teams around them when that season finished, same with Wolves the year before he went.
For example even when he got 46 points with Wolves they had a -15 GD, worse off than Everton and Brentford directly below them.
For Bournemouth, his side conceded 55 in 34 games. The average for a 17th place side I believe is right around 60 or so (obviously in 38). Not saying this to be alarmist just thought it’s quite an interesting tidbit in terms of how his teams have got points and faired overall.
If the trend follows suit, we will maybe have some games like yesterday at the top clubs and a few games where we look a quite vulnerable if momentum shifts. Not ideal for a side trying to stay up or the heart rate.
However, if we win plenty of games by a 1 goal margin and lose plenty by a 3 goal margin the points are still there.
A rambling way of saying we might just need to follow the same formula as our first two games to stay up, especially with some of the attackers we have that can hurt sides. Transfer strategy in terms of asset allocation seems to reflect this as well.
Personally I’d rather concede under 50 though to make it nice and comfortable but probably rather unlikely!

It's a very small sample size to date, but he could well have dug in to guarantee the point against Sunderland.
A lot of managers would and understandably so.

Scott Parker lost 9-0 to Liverpool. Bournemouth then sacked him and replaced him with Gary O'Neil, initially on a caretaker/interim basis.
Before that season started, almost everyone predicted relegation for Bournemouth (apart from me and some Irish guy on Youtube - I literally had no knowledge on their squad. I didn't guess any of the relegated sides correctly that year so that's something).
It didn't look like a good side on paper, so for him to immediately take over and go 6 unbeaten was a great achievment at the time, before only winning 1 game in 12.
To lead them to safety in the end was an underrated achievement that did not really get talked about enough at the time, even if some of their squad would go on to have good careers, or long stays in the PL. | | | |

If we’re going to be aggressive and not have as much control you just have to hope that confidence isn’t knocked too much if we come up on the wrong side of things.
We for sure have the talent to hurt teams and I can see us nicking quite a lot of goals from being out of possession (done that 3 times already!).
I just worry about the defense with so many of them still being there from 2024, had some PTSD yesterday that second half.
Anyway, such early days let’s hope we can form an elite CM double 6 that should help things plenty in terms of being more solid when needed!
Think that’s why they really wanted Palacios, he offers both qualities of a 6 and 8 kind of role. I can actually see it being him and Florentino potentially with Lukic as a closer, we shall have to see. [Post edited 1 Sep 4:28]

For me the biggest problem right now is all the DCM injuries. He cannot play Nunez there as he is not competitive enough to play that role. I would have started Palacios next to Lukic and would have seen us much more resolute. Once Matasiwa, Luis and Taylor are back we will be much stronger.
I think we are in a pretty good position once the above is fixed. I am not the biggest fan of Nunez and i think his way forward is a free role. But that becomes difficult if it is a 50:50 with him and Enciso.
I think i would have played Casey RM at United. Fatawu has had a tough time if things in his opening two games. Versus Sunderland their scorer played well and they were greatly reduced once he went off just after HT and Rashford played well in his first match for them in almost two years. Tough gig for Fatawu. Casey would have been a better match there. Fair play to Fatawu the only time he beat Shaw all game got us ahead. |  | | |

Well, two games in 3 points is better than last time plus we have a team where midfield is not settled upon and an OOP rb with a relatively rookie striker.
If Palacios/Luis/Outtara can sort these positions then we have a chance. Like you I was thinking about GD on Sunday but better to win one, lose one than lose one and draw one. | |

Last time we were caught in the trap of not being good enough to score enough to win enough but not being good enough to keep things tight enough to give ourselves the chance of winning, instead conceding around average 2gpg or more.
This early season openness isnt really a big sample given the teams played. I also wonder if teams early in the season are inclined to be a bit more attacking and they attempt to put points on the board that they can later defend and chip away by adding a point here and there.
Only time will tell on all this but we will need to show greater defensive capabilities as the season progresses to have a chance in the more marginal games. | |
