10 reflections on Ipswich 0-2 Liverpool, the squad and the season ahead 13:23 - Sep 5 with 932 viewsunstableblue

1) Just great to be under the lights on a Friday night against one of the giants of world football. Portman Road looks great at the moment, blacked out stands, pitch at its best, sound system, light shows, fireworks. And great noise as the teams arrived into the colosseum.

2) There were two things Town needed to do tonight, stay very solid early on but also test their defence, and get some early threat on them. Unfortunately this was a must win game for Iraola and Liverpool, with several players with a point to prove. And The Reds came out like a steam train - and with £85m + £100m of talent in Gakpo and Isak. A combination of worldy passing and looseness from us - we failed to keep them out. Just as with Trent and Salah 2 seasons ago. Wonder if Gakpo with the arrival of Bercola was particularly fired up.

3) At 2-0 after 9mins there was real danger of a repeat of Old Trafford, and conceding 5 could easily have happened. But it didn’t. Bit of VAR assistance in there. I see many posters are stating Liverpool just sat back. I actually think it was as much about how well we regrouped, OShea got them together and we became robust, Lukic and Palacios started to own the middle for periods. At the same time we did get overrun in there. But it is a positive we kept it to to 2-0.

4) The Lukic and Palacios pairing could be crucial to our season. Lukic seemed to be everywhere at times. And both seem to have the ability to get the ball forward with innovative passing. Palacios is a classy player, he creates space for himself and his technically very good. And the good news is they have excellent understudies in Florentino and Matusiwa.

5) Our wide midfielders didn’t cause enough danger for me. There full backs stepped up on the night, and were positionally good. But town didn’t really create Big Chances all game, and as I said at the start we needed that. Enciso was hunting for the ball, and hence went a bit deep. Emersonn was a nuisance at times. Indeed Jacquet should have received a second yellow card and gone off.

6) It was a back four for Town, and it remained a back 4 all night. And yes it was calamitous in that first 10mins, and Greaves and OShea were getting stretched. But I was quite surprised how solid they became - well relatively give the cost of the attack against them. Davis was good, and his attacking intent grew in the second half - second fastest to Munoz on the night, and only Lukic and Szoboszlai covered more ground. Diop and Scherpen make us very good at managing aerial threat, both though had wobbly moments. Scherpen is improving I think despite last nights errors, better distribution at times (43% long ball completion; 30% against United)

7) I thought Jack Clarke looked at the level for me. I think Maeda gives great physical pressing and pace, but Clarke is more threatening. Albeit we didn’t really carve anything that second half. I do think he, Jaden and Egeli will play a part this season. McAteer is a good sub just for his energy and running, but he’s better to come on and protect a lead, not to increase our threat.

8) I like GONs positivity in the post match, the headlines are simple it was a Liverpool side very fired up and we lost our heads, but we regrouped well, grabbed back the game and caused them problems that meant why went deeper, but those problems never turned into real threat.

9) Some of the reaction on here and in the stand around me to the game and player performance make me feel like it’s going to be a long season!! To be fair the North Stand stayed with the team and applauded the energy and efforts at the end. But GON and the players need to make sure we don’t let the season get away from us, as a risk this fan base are not in for the muck and bullets we are going to have to endure.

10) I do think we can survive. It will be tight and we need a Palace, Everton or Fulham to drop down into the survival skirmish. BUT, we do look a good set of players. We’ve got more experience, energy, pace and quality - Flemming was a physical handful when he came on. We’ve got real attacking threat. BUT we need 4 points from Palace (a), Everton (a) and Fulham (h). And to keep bonding and growing as a team, with fans invested.

Felt a bit for Flemming, not a nice game to come to for your debut.
He will be a good addition, but he came on like he'd won a raffle, his mindset not with the game at all and he was just so excited to be out there and his passing decisions were funny in the end with how bad they were.
But i'm looking forward to seeing him in future games once he calms down :)

Do you mean awful to come into a game like that on your debut?

He only had 24mins, 8 touches, so you can’t really judge.

But he showed his physicality, albeit as you say only competed 2 out of 5 passes.

His physicality and ability to get around the pitch impressed me. Think he and Emersonn can play the necessary role.

Yeah sorry didn't explain that first sentence well, will edit.

I don't think we will see it, but i really wouldn't mind seeing him and emmerson together sometimes.

Glad you mentioned the new sound system, won't call it 'tannoy' or PA. Yes, anything is an improvement on the last manifestation, but oh my, someone needs to set it up properly.
Too much bass, rattling top end, and very thin mid range (where most of speech frequencies exist). This makes speech quite intelligible, not really what you want from a Public Address system.
