Town 4-1 Leyton Orient
Town 4-1 Leyton Orient

Town progressed to the second round of the Carling Cup for the first time since 2004 via a comfortable 4-1 victory over Leyton Orient at Portman Road. Danny Haynes netted twice along with Tommy Miller and Alan Lee with Adam Boyd scoring for the visitors.

Jim Magilton made eight changes to the side which lost to Preston on Saturday. In came Shane Supple in goal, Chris Casement at right-back, Richard Naylor and Alex Bruce at the centre of the defence, Liam Trotter and Tommy Miller in midfield and Alan Lee and Jon Walters up front.

Town almost went behind in the fourth minute when Danny Granville was left unmarked and headed JJ Melligan's corner towards goal only for Alan Quinn to clear off the line.

The Blues were largely in control, however, but their first serious shot came in the 13th minute when Danny Haynes cut in from the right and hit a shot which O's keeper Glenn Morris tipped over.

Five minutes later, Haynes crossed from the right, Lee laid the ball back and Trotter hit a shot over the bar.

Town went in front in the 20th minute. Walters held off an Orient player in his own half as the visitors attacked and sent Haynes away from halfway. The former England U19 international took the ball into the area a little too wide but managed a shot which keeper Morris allowed into his net at his near post.

Morris was similarly at fault for Town's second goal, which came only a minute later. The keeper punched poorly when under pressure from Walters, the ball arriving with Tommy Miller on the edge of the area, from where the midfielder volleyed the ball into the net.

Richard Naylor headed wide from a corner, then Walters might have scored when through but keeper Morris redeemed himself slightly by making a fine save.

The game was effectively sealed in the 44th minute when Alan Lee sent Haynes away on goal on the left, the pacy wideman slipping the ball past the keeper.

Orient had looked OK on the ball but had been opened up by Danny Haynes's pace on too many occasions, while keeper Morris had had a half to forget.

The second period didn't start any better for the League One side. After only two minutes a corner was cleared back to Alan Quinn and his return ball was headed across Morris and into the net by Alan Lee.

While many Town supporters were still celebrating, Orient pulled a goal back, Adam Boyd cutting in from the right and chipping Shane Supple.

But there was little chance of an Orient revival and Town looked the more likely side to score the next goal, Walters and Quinn both heading wide from Alan Lee crosses.

David Norris replaced Quinn for the last half an hour, prior to Trotter shooting narrowly wide and then making way for Garvan.

Haynes wasn't far from completing his hat-trick in the 65th minute, but Morris palmed away his shot from the left flank, although none too comfortably.

Kevin Lisbie replaced Walters for the final 21 minutes before to Alex Bruce picked up a needless yellow card for kicking the ball away.

Lisbie should have added Town's fifth when played in one-on-one with the keeper by Haynes but Morris did well to block to his left.

Norris picked up a late cuation for a couple of clumsy fouls, prior to Sean Thornton, the pick of the O's players after coming off the bench at half-time, joining him in the book for a late challenge on Lisbie on the edge of the box.

An easy victory for Town with Haynes's pace always a threat in a first half in which the game was effectively won. The Blues played out the second half under little threat and might have added to their goals further. As it was, the four in the first 47 minutes were enough to secure a place in the draw for the second round which takes place on Wednesday on Sky Sports Two following the Wycombe Wanderers-Birmingham City tie.
