Chaplin Set to Stay at Portsmouth
Thursday, 8th Jan 2026 19:03

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho says Conor Chaplin is likely to remain on loan at Fratton Park for the rest of the season.

Chaplin returned to his parent club on loan on deadline day in the summer but with a recall clause this month. Speaking after the Oxford match, Blues manager Kieran McKenna said he hadn’t ruled out Chaplin returning to Portman Road.

However, talks having taken place between the clubs, Mousinho says the 28-year-old is set to stay in Hampshire.

“Conor is likely to stay,” he told the Portsmouth News. “We had a brief conversation with Ipswich on Sunday and the intention is for him to stay for the season.

“You never know, but the difference with Conor compared to Minhyeok [Yang] is Spurs can recall him and send him back out again, whereas if Conor’s recalled he can only play for Ipswich because he’s already played for them this season. That puts us in a stronger position.

“I haven’t spoken to him about a recall, but there’s loads to come from Chappers. He’s given us a huge amount, in terms of what he’s done as a leader.

“He’s come in and grown into his role over the past five or six weeks, now there’s that big part of his offensive game we think we can really build on.

“He’s really good at dropping deep, building play and he’s really good with the press. Now adding goals and assists to his game will take it to the next level for us.”

Chaplin’s spell with Pompey, who are only a point off the relegation zone, has been underwhelming up to now, the forward having made 14 starts and five sub appearances without scoring.

While latterly operating in his favoured number 10 position, the one-time Barnsley and Coventry man was often utilised wide on the right shortly after his return to Fratton Park.

Chaplin, one of the stars of the back-to-back promotion seasons, seems likely to have played his last game for the Blues with his Town contract up at the end of the campaign.

Regardless of what league we are playing in next season, can’t see him in a town shirt again.

I expect some differences of opinion on this particular article. For me, ultimately a sensible decision. Make no mistake I regard CC as a top guy and a potential leader for someone. But it's time to move forward without the constant looking back.

A great guy, don’t expect to see him in a town shirt again. This loan will likely end up being a permanent move in the summer

Sure we will always remember him with fondness and respect but there's no room for him in the squad now .

Hes been excellent for us. But as article points out, it’s been an underwhelming loan for him - albeit played on the wing. Reality is, why would we want him back after a disappointing half season? We need to add better than we have to achieve our goal. Promotion. Sadly, CC is not the answer, but of course wish him extremely well.

@itfchorry thank god you’re not in charge then. Chappers was genius in the promotion seasons but that was then. He’s been poor this season on loan, what do you think he’d bring to us now?

Portsmouth are shockingly bad, and he’s being utilised in entirely the wrong positions. Don’t judge him on that, no-one could succeed in that team.

Absolutely love Chappers like no other since the days of Matty Holland and co. But, let the consistently fantastic performances & wonderful memories of THOSE two seasons be the ever lasting mental association with regards to his connection with our club. not a bit part second spell 6 month loan recall before he is discarded like an old greyhound at the end of it.

Hope he really settles in at his boyhood club and ends his career in the manor befitting a player and a man of such admirable talent and character. If he helps Pompey finish a place above Naarwich in 21st he will have done a job for us anyway.

Good luck Chappy, modern day legendry status in the bag up here son.

The article starts with "returned to his parent club," that's surely a mistake? Shouldn't it be boyhood club?

I'm mixed on this. I was shocked to see him leave on loan, then I saw he hasn't exactly pulled up trees at Portsmouth, but I do think that he'd probably do better here because he knows the system so well. I wouldn't be surprised to see him come back IF Szmodics leaves

The one comment that stands out here is "He’s given us a huge amount, in terms of what he’s done as a leader" - This is why I was most confused by the timing of this loan when we were clearly lacking leaders in the squad after the summer clear out.

Personally still think he had a lot to offer Town in the Championship but maybe the club are looking at players they think can handle the step up to give more stability next time promotion comes around? Not sure that they have nailed the recruitment so far in that respect, especially considering the player doing the best in that role - Nunez - was not signed to play in the 10
