Lincoln Confirm Barbrook's Return to Town
Tuesday, 6th Jan 2026 17:08

Lincoln City have confirmed that Blues midfielder Fin Barbrook has returned to Portman Road, his loan spell at Sincil Bank having been brought to an early end.

The Imps’ director of football Jez George revealed in December that the 21-year-old would be leaving his club this month having featured very rarely during the first half of what was meant to be a season-long loan.

Barbrook joined the Imps in August but made only three EFL Trophy [Vertu Trophy] appearances for League One’s second-placed side and continued to play regularly for Town’s U21s during the spell.

Town boss Kieran McKenna admitted he was disappointed that the spell hadn’t worked out for the Southwold-born youngster.

“A little bit. I thought he had a really good pre-season and he had some opportunities,” he said.

“I know Dmitri [Halajko, director of football operations] and different people from the club have been in contact with Lincoln a lot and have been up there to visit.

“Loans can maybe don’t work out how you would hope for lots of different reasons and for a young player it’s about taking the lessons. You can have good loans even when you don’t play because you can take a lot of lessons from being in that environment and, obviously, the team has done well.

“I think at the moment the plan is for him to come back in January and then we’ll assess the situation from there.

“He had a good pre-season and he’s been coming back for the U21s games anyway, so he’s still been getting his minutes. We’ll decide the next best course of action.”

While Barbrook has appeared for both Town - in the Carabao Cup tie at Bromley - and Lincoln this season, as his only games for the Imps were in the Vertu Trophy, he is allowed to go out on loan to another side with a number of other League One clubs having expressed an interest in the summer.

Another promising youngster could do a good job for a top division 2 side. Hope he gets fixed up quickly

I had the honour of presenting Fin with the 2023-4 player of the year trophy @ PR 18 months back, what a lovely fella. I really hope he continues to develop, he's still very young, and gets a good loan now

Fin can indeed be great but if he stays here but his risk is that he becomes just another name on the list of “go-nowhere’s” after Cam Harry Elkan Luke Flynn Jason Tristam Jack Freddie amongst others. I really like KMc but his reluctance to use our own guys is something I don’t understand. If we’re not going to play them : just sell them or let them go - if only for my blood pressure

Yes, it is baffling and it's definitely not nostalgia. We may have the investment that we could only dream about in the past, and yes, the due diligence Gamechanger did (Mike O'Leary: 'We looked at more than one club but every time it came back to Ipswich.') certainly made me think of all those trophies we probably would have won, it made me think that crowds of 38,000++ could be a regular thing. But, football is much bigger than it was, there are a few other clubs actually achieving what the owners are looking to achieve. So it seems almost perverse to ignore or not prioritise one of the elements that actually brought us the success we had: play your best young talent. It is/was very Ipswich. With five subs, and yes, with all the work done with the current group getting them to understand the system and eachother seeming to be paying off, there is no real excuse. If Fin comes on for Azor on 65 or heaven forfend, starts!, is he usurping an out and out world beater? Likewise Cam for Jens or Jack.

Or Cam for Marcelino, a similar role I think he played at Wycombe last season. CBs I get Kieran prefers them to play through, so opportunities may be more limited for Elkan and Jacob - but we have the Cup. Honestly, if we can't get the calibre of player we really need in this window, we have the resources already. Play them and it will move the club forwarrd.
