Bruce Confirmed as Captain
Bruce Confirmed as Captain
Thursday, 27th Aug 2009 16:40

Town boss Roy Keane has confirmed that Alex Bruce will continue to wear the captain’s armband, as revealed by TWTD earlier in the week. Bruce skippered the side at West Brom and Peterborough in place of Gareth McAuley, who has captained the side since joining the Blues at the start of the 2008/09 season.

Keane told the club site: "Alex is taking on the role for now. I spoke to Gareth before I left him out of the team at West Brom and he's been professional about it, as you would expect.

"He is coming back from a fairly long injury and sometimes it's important for players to solely focus on getting back to full fitness, so for the time being Alex has taken on the armband.

"He plays at the back and like midfield, it's a good position to captain from. I know he's a bit young, but I think he has the potential to be a good skipper."

Very happy with this decision...

Now RK needs to push Bruce forward to play in front of the back 4, and play Balkestein at LeftBack, Delaney & McAuley at CentreBack and Wright at RightBack - defensive crisis solved...

blue boots, like the idea of pushin bruce forward, god knows he's better than healy there. but think the back 4 should be wright, mcauley, pim, peters? certainly 3 of them, just think if peters bombs on, bruce can slot into these positions

Bruce!! Only 24 but has the right attitude and aptititude for the job!!Who would of thought all those years ago when his ol man put us out of the league cup his son would grow up to not only play but be captain of the super blues! Steve Bruce was probably the best centre half not to play for England! Roy Keans best signing so far!!!!

B1TFC - I think Bruce playing the holding role could be the making of him; if RK can't teach him how to play that role, no-one can!

I'd prefer to see Peters playing further forward (RightWing), and I'd be happy to start 2010 with a back 4 of Civelli - Balkestein - McAuley - Wright. I'm expecting RK to pull in a few signings over the next few days that might change that though...

Well... I would rather have Richard Wright as the Club captain! I think he more than anybody at the club deserves it!

Awful decision.

Our captain should be the first name in the teamsheet; Bruce is lucky he gets in the first XI.

Loyal to the club? Is that why he jumped to sign the contract we offered last season rather than hold out for more money. Thought not.

Had everyone forgotten how average Bryce was last season? One good performance against Palace doesn't change that.

At last, we all seem to agree on one piece of news, sorry Blue Balls, but who is Bryce ? I know a Bryce and he's a pill*ck. Take care Townies

Blue_Balls i think his concern about signing was as much to do with the manager as the money - he soon signed when Keane came along! Great decision, this guy plays with his heart, ten more like him we'd be top of the league. you can teach someone how to play good football, you cannot put fire in their belly you either have it or you dont.

Sound move. Could be the making of two Town players. Always thought Mcauley struggled with the captaincy; too much too soon, thanks Jim. Hopefully with the responsibility gone we will see the true Mcauley, always glimpses of a fine central defender who can play a killer ball. Bruce is everything you want in a captain although a little less polished as a player, hopefully the Captaincy will make him a little bit sharper, no doubt he is a good leader. COYB

quality decision by mr. keane, wears his heart on his sleeve, sorry blue_balls but i think your wrong on this one mate, id play him at centre half would like to see a new centre half to partner him as i dont think macauley is good enough

Fully deserved, maybe now his dad will let us have some cheap players!!

Whenever we have conceded goals in the past it is evident that the 'heads up lads' cries do not come from Mcauley and he probably isnt captain material - in my opinion R Wright should be captain as he is the only one with guaranteed start at the mo. Mcauley had a poor start last season but did eventually turn in some promising performances so we do know he has it in him. He seems to have started this season like the last one unfortunately but hopefully the loss of captaincy may help him to concentrate more on his game.
Can anyone else imagine imagine the conversation between Roy and S Bruce ; "Now I've made your son captain , now give me some of your players"
