Keane Dismisses Yorke Claims
Keane Dismisses Yorke Claims
Friday, 2nd Oct 2009 21:47

Roy Keane has dismissed former Manchester United team-mate Dwight Yorke’s assessment of his management style made in his latest autobiography. Yorke, whose new book is currently being serialised in a national newspaper, played for Keane during his time as boss at Sunderland.

Keane says he hasn’t read the newspaper featuring the extracts but rejected Yorke’s claims that he led by inspiring fear: “I certainly wouldn’t agree that I try to rule with fear.

“Players are entitled to their opinions and obviously they’re selling books. I think that would be Yorkey’s second or third book now, so he must be stuck for a few bob.

“I take on board comments from people who I have respect for in the game and Yorkey’s not someone I’ve got respect for in the game. I had previously, but this was even at Sunderland.

“If he thought that, he was quick to sign a new contract and then didn’t try a leg in his last season at Sunderland and went back to Trinidad for reasons that had nothing to do with football. Maybe he’ll put that in his book.

“You’ll have to ask the players, I don’t think I rule with fear, I don’t think that works, it might the odd weekend if you want a reaction from players. But I’m pretty sure if I want to be a manager over a long period it won’t, be it at Ipswich or Sunderland. You’ll maybe have to ask more than one player.”

Keane says he left Sunderland because of outside interference after changes in the boardroom two years into his time as manager: “What I couldn’t tolerate in the end was being told what to do and where to live and how to treat my players.

“I thought the way I had worked at Sunderland had worked, but other people all of a sudden weren’t happy, yet previously it was ‘thumbs up Roy, you’re doing great’.”

The Blues boss says he hasn’t suffered the same issues during his first few months at Town: “So far, they’ve let me get on with the job. Obviously there have been conversations about stuff, as there would have been with my previous chief executive, but it’s the way people speak to you that’s important and I need to be treated with respect.”

Keane says he is enjoying life in Suffolk: “I’m happy here, the family are happy, but obviously I know in football you’ve got to get results to go with it. What happens to me is not important, it’s all about the club and the players and we’ll keep working hard and that’s all we can do."

stop berating UEFA81 as each of us have our different opinions of RK, especially when the results are for all to see - winless after 10 games, bottom of the table. I support rebuilding a team that is strong enough to challenge for promotion, but it is hard to accept the results achieved so far and keep coming up with the same excuses. I can hardly believe that a team in transition cannot even secure a win given the quality we have in the club.

As the saying goes - no smoke without fire - you cannot totally disregard what Yorkie said, unless you've played under RK before! And you need to think deep, what has happened to current crop of players, they all seem to be playing below what they can offer. That's something that you have to ponder on what goes on in the dressing room/training pitch....

Well, ok. Perhaps I should put my personal feelings about RK aside but it still doesn't alter the fact that we are winless in 11 games and are 5 points adrift at the bottom of the league - something of which I am not accustomed to, as are many Town fans.

I believe in the team, I think they can succeed and I am behind them no matter what happens - even if we were in the Blue Square Prem I would be a loyal ITFC fan - wherever ITFC are then that's where I am at.

I am sorry for having an opinion about the manager, it seems obvious that opinions aren't allowed on this site without being abused or threatened or whatever. Whatever happened to free-speech?

I'm not a 'glory-seeker' either - as so rightly said, if I was I would follow some crap like Man U or whatever, but I've always supported Ipswich (through thick and thin) and because of that fact I feel that I have the right to express my concerns and views about the team's performance and management. If that's too hard for some people to handle and goes against other opinions then that's hardly my fault is it?

Deep down I love the club and as such have a profound and dedicated interest in the club's stature and preservation of our fine reputation and standing. To me the appointment of RK and the ownership of ME are not what Ipswich needed or are all about, but, hey, that's just my opinion.

It may come to the relief of many that, until RK is sacked or walks (which I reckon and sincerely hope will be this week) that I will not be posting on here again. It's like smashing your head against a brick wall.

In the meantime, good luck to Ipswich, hoping the results come very soon and we can establish ourselves as a force in this league.

Speak to you all again next week then.

I don't understand why UEFA81 is getting such stick .Keane was a thug as a player and as an international ( ref abusive outburst at Mick Mc Carthy ) and obviously this continued at Sunderland. He was and remains the WRONG type of manager for ITFC .We all want the best for the club !
